This is the coffee sleeve and the front part of the menu printed on the paper i was telling you guys, it does change a lot with the lighting as you can see in one pic it looks lighter than the other.

I added the pink into the sleeve so it can relate to the packaging.

Hello Class,

Thanks to all who have continued to keep the project moving forward, I can see a lot of good progress overall. However, to those of you that are behind, please remember that you have only a short time to complete the work so try to apply as much out-of-class time as possible for a fantastic final result.

As luck would have it, when I returned from my trip, I discovered that a close family member has passed so I am off to NY but will be back for class on week 10. In class we will look at presentation examples for the final presentation. In addition you will have time to complete the invoice in class. Please have all billable expense receipts and time sheets available and refer to the forms I posted under “Handouts” on the main site for an example. The other main task of week 10 is to proof-read the final prints or debug the uploaded site.

I wish you all the best in your efforts and will see you in class next week (week 10).

Welcome to Track My Gum. The official website of Mr. Chew Gum and home to gum chewing enthusiast Brian King. If you don’t know Brian, he’s twice as crazy as his picture above, and absolutely loves chewing gum. Too much actually. And just to show you, we tracked where he’s been chewing. Take a look for yourself. Who says obsession is a bad thing? We think it’s pretty darn cool.

Track My Gum started out of a love for a product. That product just so happens to be gum. This odd obsession sparked an idea for a website, which in turn sparked an idea for this project: a fully branded viral marketing campaign sure to grab the attention of any gum-chewing enthusiast.

The idea behind the site is pretty simple. We track Brian King and record how many pieces of gum he chews per day. While that may seem like a simple task, the mechanics behind it are quite involved. Learn more about how it all works in the process section. You can see where Brian has been by checking out the map. Through the help of our iPhone application, Brian can let us know when and where he’s chewing at all times.

The Viral campaign works like this: A commercial advertising Brian and his obsession will be posted and aired on user-created content websites such as YouTube and Vimeo. The character of Brian King will then become the brand driver. He is what people will want to see on the website. The website will spread by word of mouth as well as on blogs, a personal podcast from Brian, and by ads on Facebook or Myspace. We target these areas because there is a high volume of web-savvy users. People who are into social networking and enjoy the vast abilities that the Internet has to offer. We want those who appreciate technology and will have an interest in the technical aspect of this campaign.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, we get the viral marketing, but who the heck is Mr. Chew?”

Mr. Chew Chewing Gum was developed as a way to employ this viral campaign. While not a real gum brand, Mr. Chew was created with the campaign in mind. The western look given to Mr. Chew helped spur the Old Western branding. From this point, we kept advancing the look, using appropriated images and textures to bring to the forefront the idea of tracking Brian. Almost like an outlaw being tracking in the Old West.

“So this is all for show? Because it looks pretty darn good!”

As Stated before this is a project designed for a group project class here at the Art Institute of California San Diego. As a team we concepted and produced this viral marketing campaign. With an ad agency setting, we created and billed this project including everything from logo creation to the programming for the iPhone application. Everything is fully functional and could be applied quite easily to a real-world brand. With the help of Brian King, Dominic Damien, and Sean O’Brien, we present to you trackmygum.com.

The idea of tracking an obsessive gum chewer might seem silly, but what’s truly unbelievable is how elaborate the process behind all of it really is.

iPhone SDK

The execution relies heavily on the iPhone 2.0 SDK software, the addition of the geo-location APIs in particular. Dominic Damien at 19villages built an amazing internal-use application for the project. Most of the magic happens behind the scenes, all Brian needs to do is tap one of two buttons: “chew” or “spit.” The iPhone application captures his physical location, and along with an optional note, sends the data back to the site. As an added bonus, we can continue to track Brian even when he does not have reception. The application just stock piles any new pieces and sends them off as soon as he is in range again.

Riddin’ the Rails

Track My Gum is built using the Ruby on Rails framework. I chose this project as an opportunity to finally learn the language, and as every single person that has been in my position says: I am truly amazed how fast and easy we were able to develop the site. As mentioned on the overview, Track My Gum was conceived as a university project. Ruby on Rails made it effortless to stay on the tight schedule the situation presented.

Third Party Integration

The nature of the site lends itself very well to the always-on culture of the internet. Now that we have all this wonderful data, we want to make it available through any distribution method imaginable. Currently, aside from browsing the data here at trackmygum.com, you can be informed of Brian’s chewing habits via Twitter or RSS. We currently have plans to create an SMS digest with the daily totals. If you have any ideas of other integration methods, let us know!

I created a Tumblr at blog.trackmygum.com (I like to call it Track My Blog). I put a few posts on it to get it started.
Brian is friends with the people who run a rather large podcast (I am told their listenership is at least 20,000), who leaked the site prior to launch this Friday (9/5/08). I posted a clip on the blog, it's rather interesting to hear someone else talk about our project. Brian will mention it on his (much smaller) podcast, and hopefully NLO will mention it again and possibly have Brian (or us) on the show to discuss it when we actually launch. Viral already!
The automatic status updater is working and functional. Every minute a background process checks to see if the chewing status has changed, and updates the chewing status indicator by the logo to reflect the change. It does this with AJAX, which basically means it can update it without you refreshing the page.
Twitter is a "short form blogging service." The site is pretty popular with our demographic, so TMG will also publish the chews to a Twitter account. The idea is to make the data as available as possible, through any imaginable distribution method. You know, just because.
I am currently working on the technical descriptions that will go on /about/process. The walkthrough demo will also be embedded on that page.
Dominic has made progress on the iPhone app, but it is not yet fully functional. He is going to be sending me some screenshots of its current state, and this weekend we are going to meet up and hopefully churn it out.

The site is live at tmg.lamespace.com. I need to transfer trackmygum.com from Brian's account to mine so that I can host it there. The map is registered for trackmygum.com, which is the reason for the error message in the beginning. That won't be an issue once it's switched over.

Ok, so here we are week 8. I think that we are moving along very smoothly and that the project has taken shape nicely. The site is more or less assembled and I am working on the copy for the sections. We have our video, and Marisela has a handle on the packaging.

My only concern is about the video. That it may seem too separate from the brand. I think it would work perfectly if we didn't have such a themed brand, but we address Brian in the commercial different than we do on the website. His outlaw character is supposed to seem hardened and criminal, but he doesn't seem all that bad in the commercial. Is there some way we can bring the two closer together?

I think this should be something we can work on in class tonight. I also still need to type up the copy I have so far so Lindsey can read over it. I worked on the Project overview, and a bit on the Brian himself. I think I may need some hepl from you Jacob to get more details about Brian.
